Green Valley Festival ends with successful Parade of Troupes

By: Cherisse M. Sutton-Jeffers, SKNVibes.com

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – THE curtains came down on the Green Valley Festival last night (June. 13) after a successful day of the Parade of Troupes through the streets of the Cayon community.

The troupes were originally set to touch the road from 2:00 p.m. but they did not begin until after 4:00 p.m.

The parade saw 13 troupes that decorated the village, which included four folklore troupes and four children’s troupes made up of Green Fairies, Green Valley Flower Girls, Green Valley Star Lights and the Cayon Primary School.

The five other troupes were for adults only, and they were the Shanty Town, Colours in Fantasy, Do As You Like, Green Valley Bunnies and the Modern Imagine.

The troupes paraded to the sweet sounds of the Kollision Band, Grand Masters Band and DJ Kool’s Hi-5 and climaxed at Maynard’s Park, where they went onstage and performed ‘pushing back’ and gyrating in various forms, from on their heads to laying flat on the wooden floor.

One of the highlights of the parade was a male dressed in a green one-piece swimsuit with a sash that read ‘Green Valley, Green Valley, Green Valley Gone Eeen’.

Chairperson of the Street Activities Altonia Springer told SKNVibes that the parade was a major success.

She also commented on the J’Ouvert Morning Street Jam which took place earlier in the morning and indicated that it had been one of their biggest in recent years.

Springer added that the early morning event was incident free and music was provided by the Kollision Band, which rocked the people who went out to be part of the ‘Green Coral Mass Peace and Unity Jam’.

Springer, who was also the Marketing Consultant for the Festival, said it was a successful one despite some minor glitches.

She also used the opportunity to thank all who supported the Festival and congratulated the committee on its 15th year of promoting the community event.

The Green Valley Festival held its official opening on Thursday, June 9 and ended yesterday (June 13).
