St. Kitts Entertainment Weekend Review

Detention Party at Mau pau
By: Cherisse M. Sutton-Jeffers, SKNVibes.com

By BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – THE past weekend was a long and very busy one with numerous activities, including events in relation to the Green Valley Festival and the celebration of Whit Monday.

On Friday, Shadia Dore was crowned the 2011 Green Valley Queen from a field of five contestants. She also took the awards for Best Talent and Best African Wear, while the Fourplay Band kept patrons entertained at the end of the Pageant.

Just a few metres from the venue where the pageant was held, patrons lined the street to enter De Green Valley Pub in which the sounds of the Grand Masters Band echoed through Cayon Village.

The action kicked off late at Ziggy’s Bar on the Frigate Bay Strip and, according to management, Chalice Sounds which was scheduled to provide musical entertainment for the night did not turn up.

Mike, manager of the bar, expressed his disappointment and explained that even after several telephone calls to the DJ he did not answer or return the calls up to Sunday. However, DJ Yardy saved the day at the last minute and the bar was up and kicking around 2:00 a.m.

Some of the other bars on the Strip had a fairly good turnout, including Lava Ground, Family and Friends and Inon’s where the patrons mostly stood around and sipped on drinks.

At the G-Spot in Sandy Point, the night went well until police turned up and stopped the music at 5:00 a.m., which was to the disappointment of a decent crowd that was enjoying the feel of good atmosphere.

On Saturday, Singing Angie made history by being the first calypsonian to three-peat in the Green Valley Senior Calypso Bacchanal. She competed amongst 11 others and outshined them all singing ‘One Song’.

Hours later, the ‘Freaky Gyal Dance’ held at The Lantern in Sandy Point did not go down as expected, but the action was booming in Basseterre at Sugars for ‘Expelled Chaptah 2’.

Although many patrons did not follow the rebellious dress code as they did in Chaptah 1 held last year, there were still a few females who complied; rocking short pleated skirts and stockings.

Judging from the heat greeting patrons at the door, it was clear that the venue was packed within and without. However, despite the sweat-dripping bodies on the inside, patrons were still moving to the sounds of the DJs.

Sugars Night Club was not the only venue in Basseterre with action. The ‘Detention’ dance party at Ma Pau was also in full swing when SKNVibes arrived at that location.

Upon approaching the venue, it seemed very dead as if no one was in attendance, but to much surprise the inside was filled to capacity with people throwing up hand signals and ladies rotating their waist lines.

On the following day, the St. Kitts Music Festival Local Promotions Committee held a Beach Bash at the Monkey Bar in Frigate Bay.

Although attendance was poor, there were many give-a-ways and patrons seemed to have enjoyed themselves before, during and after the dancing competition which took place.

When SKNVibes arrived at Doc’s, just a little further down the beach, the Fourplay Band had not yet began playing but got in motion later into the night.

Ziggy’s Bar also was off to a late start with DJ Yardy, but as the night grew so did the crowd.

Over on the eastern side of the island was Green Valley’s Reggae and Soca Band-O-Rama Explosion, which saw a poor turnout but an excellent energetic performance by soca sensation Pumpa, who is originally from St. Kitts but resides in St. Croix.

Meanwhile, on Monday, it was over to Cayon for the Green Coral Mass Peace and Unity Jam where the streets were flooded with revellers, who at the end of the morning had a nice peaceful jam.

Later in the afternoon, Cayon Village was once again filled with music and excitement, as the street parade took place seeing 13 colorful troupes on display.
