PORT-OF-SPAIN, Trinidad and Tobago, June 6th 2011 – Suresh Sookoo, Chief Executive Officer, Caribbean Banking, RBC today reconfirmed a commitment to the RBC/RBTT Caribbean Children’s Cancer Fund, presenting Brian Lara, Chairman of the Cancer Treatment Foundation (CTF), the administrator of the Fund, with TT$1.2 million (US$187,500) to provide treatment for children 16 years of age and younger who are diagnosed with cancer.
Commenting on the donation Sookoo reiterated RBC’s commitment to maintaining a strong presence in the community and to identifying and responding to its most critical needs. “Hundreds of children across the region are battling paediatric cancer which requires prompt and specific treatment for successful results. To date the RBC/RBTT Caribbean Children’s Cancer Fund has disbursed approximately TT$1.5 million (US$228,000) making it possible for 21 biopsy specimen tests to be performed and 11 children across the Caribbean, ranging in age from 2 to 16 to receive treatment,” Sookoo said.
Today’s cheque represents the third tranche of corporate funding which RBC has committed to the Fund. The Cancer Treatment Foundation will receive another two contributions of the same amount in 2012 and 2013 as part of a five-year commitment by RBC to paediatric cancer. Last year, an additional TT$1.3 million (US$203,125) was given to the fund as a result of employee fundraisers and public donations across the region.
Parents or guardians of young persons 16 years and under, who are diagnosed with cancer and reside in the countries where RBC or RBTT operates, are encouraged to apply for assistance through any branch of the bank.
Today’s cheque presentation was made at a ceremony to announce the start of formal operations under the RBC banner, with RBC Royal Bank replacing RBTT as the brand in Trinidad and Tobago, the home of RBC’s Caribbean head office. In the coming months, RBTT operations across the Caribbean from Jamaica to the Eastern Caribbean and Barbados, to Curacao and Suriname, will all adopt the new RBC brand. The existing RBC operations in the Bahamas, Cayman Islands, Turks and Caicos, Eastern Caribbean and Barbados will also move to the updated brand expression to create one RBC in the Caribbean.
