ROADTOWN Tortola, BVI, June 16th 2011 – The Ministry of Natural Resources and Labour and the Conservation and Fisheries Department have deemed the Parade for the Planet a success as it represented the biggest showing thus far in the parade’s five year history.

The parade which is geared to stimulate public action to protect the environment while providing an avenue for creative expression on environmentally stemmed topics also featured first-time participants for a number of schools and organisations.

Speaking to the Department of Information and Public Relations Chief Conservation and Fisheries Officer Mr. Bertrand Lettsome said, “The message is clear. We are calling on persons to act now to protect and preserve the environment we live in. We must increase our awareness on how our actions impact the environment and how important it is for us to safeguard and defend our natural resources.”

Messages echoed by participants along the parade route encouraged onlookers to protect the forests, birds, and trees; reduce, reuse and recycle; use recyclable bags and re-useable containers; and protect the sea grass beds and mangroves. A number of creative head gear, costumes and props were also on display.

This year’s parade featured first time representatives from Century House Montessori School and the Bregado Flax Secondary Education Centre. Other schools represented included the Ebenezer Thomas, Jost Van Dyke Primary and the fifth-year participants the Willard Wheatley Primary School.

The Elmore Stoutt High School Environmental Club, the local chapter of the Caribbean Youth Environment Network (CYEN), Road Town Wholesale, Green VI and Alternative Energy Systems were also present.

Additionally staff from the National Parks Trust, the Conservation and Fisheries Department and the Ministry of Natural Resources and Labour in addition to the Conservation and Fisheries Department’s all female drum core were represented.

The Parade for the Planet is part of activities to highlight June as Environment Month under the theme, “Forests: Nature at Your Service.” This year’s theme is in keeping the United Nations declaration of 2011 as the International Year of Forests.
