SKABA President gives update on basketball league

A battle for supremacy in the Junior Division

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – PRESIDENT of the St. Kitts Basketball Amateur Association Kenroy Romel Tobis said that despite weather conditions that at times interrupt games, competition among clubs in the four divisions of the 2011 Basketball League is going well.

Tobias said that the Junior Division is down to its last game before the playoffs and Hitters and Uprisers will play this weekend.

“These two teams, plus Blue Devils, are all tied with all three teams only losing two games each. After this game we’ll see who is the number one team going into the playoffs,” he said.

Tobias said that the Junior Division Playoffs are scheduled to begin on June 20.

He declared that last year’s champions, Fruta Falcons, are going into the Playoffs in fourth position.

“The four teams mentioned are the teams that are usually the top four teams; however, in my opinion, Falcons were much stronger last year,” he opined.

The president said that he was very pleased with the St. Kitts-Nevis and Anguilla National Bank for renewing their commitment to the Female Division by sponsoring their league.

He said that due to inclement weather, the females have not played many games since the league started in April. He however noted that the defending champions have not lost any of their games.

“They are followed closely by Cayon Lioness who only had one loss, Ross University Dump Pan Dogs and Lady Roots are also following. You never can tell what will happen…there are two rounds for the division.

“St. Paul’s came out with an impressive win over Lady Spartans with the assistance of Naren Maynard, one of the college players who returned home and is playing for St. Paul’s. So we’re now looking at a different St. Paul’s team and we should have some exciting games coming out of the Female Division,” Tobias said.

For the A Division, Tobias said they are still looking into playing games outside of SKABA and also in Nevis.

He said that this year, the A-Division has been more exciting than usual with key teams that usually bring out their fans for support.

Tobias also said that the division has seen the inclusion of a Nevis team called PJs and the Playoffs will begin sometime in August, “as long as the rain doesn’t affect us too much”.

In the Premiere Division, Ghaut Bucks have been leading the pack with 15 points and they are closely followed by Hitters with 14 points.

“Ghetto Roots is following closely behind and the teams in the Premiere Division are only separated by a point or two. However, it’s not an easy walkover for anyone in the Premiere League. Once you can’t maintain that style and aggression, someone else is going to come and take you down,” he said.

The president is encouraging fans and the general public to go to Basketball City and support the various divisions by attending the games.
