Prime Minister of Jamaica Portia Simpson Miller |
KINGSTON, Jamaica, June 25, 2007 - Jamaica's Prime Minister Portia Simpson Miller, fresh from a US meeting with President Bush, last night declined to give an exact date for the country's next general elections.
Last night, following an emergency meeting with her People's National Party, Simpson Miller insisted elections can be held as late as October. "I will do so when I think the time is right," she said.
Her announcement came on the same day an office of the governing party was firebombed in rural St. Ann parish fueling speculation that electoral violence could erupt.
Simpson Miller, aka, 'Sista P,' came to he helm of the country last March after winning a party election following the resignation of former PM, P.J. Patterson. She had been the minister of Local Government and Sport since October 2002 and prior to that, served as minister of Labor, Welfare and Sports from 1989 to 1993.
The next general election is constitutionally due before the end of February 2008. ~~Adz:Right~~
