(Charlestown, Nevis) – Corporal James Hazel of the Charlestown Police Station has issued a statement urging drivers to be more cautious while travelling the nation’s roads after three major accidents occurred at Church Ground over the weekend.
“Drivers are asked to ensure that their vehicles are in good working condition.  We are also asking road users to drive more carefully and to be more cautious when travelling on the roads of Nevis”, were Corporal James Hazel’s words during an exclusive interview with Sknvibes.com to describe the incidents.
On Sunday 17th June at about 1:00 a.m. a traffic accident occurred along the Island Main Road at Church Ground involving motor car P4339 owned and driven by Mohendranauth Theogesingh of Government Road and Motor Jeep RA125 owned by Claude Nisbett which was parked. While no one was injured, both vehicles were damaged.  The driver was taken into police custody for observation as he was seen to be intoxicated and was later released.

Further, at about 4:45 a.m. another traffic accident took place at Nanton’s Corner on Sunday June 17th involving motor jeep PA7599 owned by Lucinda Tyrell of Brown Hill Village and driven by Collin Archibald of same address.

~~Adz:Left~~ The driver was travelling down the Island Main Road towards Charlestown when it lost control, hit the curb wall and overturned.  No one was seriously injured, however the driver fled the scene and was later arrested for not being covered by insurance.  He was subsequently granted bail.

After the two unfortunate incidents, on Monday 18th June 2007 at about 6:05 p.m. yet another traffic accident occurred along the Island Main Road at Church Ground involving motor car PA6822 owned and driven by Alphonso Maynard of Camps and motor car P7397 owned by Vere Walwyn of Hardtimes.

The driver of P7397 tried to overtake PA6822 in the area of Fig Tree Anglican Church and collided into the back of PA6822 and then the wall fence of the church. The driver of P7397 suffered injury and both vehicles were badly damaged.

In the wake of these incidents the Charlestown Police Department is urging members of the general public to drive more carefully and follow traffic regulations.  The role of the Traffic Department is to improve road safety, educate drivers and other road users on the principles of safe driving.

The Department also serves to reduce the risk of accidents, particularly those involving serious injuries, while having a more effective mobile patrol doing all this with integrity and impartiality.
