BASSETERRE St. Kitts – THE most popular rum chant around town is “Cheers and bench!”, and that is just what the people of St. Kitts can chant while having a shot or two at the newest bar in town.
Situated in the heart of Basseterre in the Palms Arcade next to The Circus, Cheers, as the bar is dubbed flaunts a number of drinks from Heineken to Guinness to Skol, and including Carib as well – any beer the taste bud desires.
The bar also caters to those who prefer something a little more on the strong side. Drinks such as Hennessy, Smirnoff, Vodka, Beehive, Malibu, and Belmont among others can also be found there.
Bar owner, Zahid Ali said that the name came from the normal habit of people raising their glass and saying ‘CHEERS!’.
His inspiration, he said, came from his love of mixing drinks and hanging with friends. He said that with this bar, persons no longer have to wonder ‘wey de lime be’, because Cheers is now the place to be.
He sees his bar as a tourist attraction as it is right in the heart of town and downstairs from the bar is the Taxi Stand which makes it a plus for the bar.
Ali said that the tourists, after walking around town, now have a place where they can just ‘kick back and relax’ without worry because the bar is not far from where the ships dock.
Ali has no doubt in his mind that his bar will be a huge success. Even with the economic crisis being a concern, he said that he has faith in his bar and he believes that it will survive.
The bar officially opened on June 17, just in time for the Music Festival rush. Opening hours are from 10:00 a.m. until the last person leaves.
In the coming weeks, persons can also look forward to the opening of a barber shop, a tattoo shop, and a pawn shop, all at the same location.
