New drainage system at Gundo Housing Project
Basseterre, St. Kitts (July 15, 2004):
Parliamentary Representative for Constituency #8 Hon. Cedric Liburd on Wednesday, toured a number of construction sites and new developments being undertaken in his constituency.

SKNIS joined Mr. Liburd, who serves as the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries, Cooperatives, Lands and Housing, on this tour.

One area visited by the parliamentary representative was the Gundo Housing Project at St. Peters.

Minister Liburd said the project which was constructed by the previous administration lacked proper infrastructure. He indicated that this caused a serious problem particularly with the road and drainage systems which resulted in flooding when heavy showers fell. This was a major concern expressed by residents.

The minister said that this situation is now corrected with the completion of a new drainage system and the paving of the roads. Also, work was done to arrest the utility concerns.

“I am pleased that the residents are now happy with the infrastructure ... which will improve the quality of life for the people of Gundo Housing Project,” he stressed.

The next stop in St. Peters was in the White House area where the water shortage problem is being tackled.

The parliamentary representative revealed that a new 100,000 gallon reservoir under construction will serve the New Road, Douglas Estate and surrounding areas.

Minister Liburd assured constituents that the new reservoir will accommodate the increase in population which is expected upon the completion of several housing projects in the area.

A new playing field at Keys is being built. The parliamentary representative stressed that the previous facility is not adequate to accommodate the increase of persons playing sports. Thus, the concept for the new field was developed and initiated.

The new facility will be bigger than the old playing field and will feature a basketball and netball court, and a football and cricket field. Seating for spectators will be added.

    Cayon Community Centre Foundation
Minister Liburd also visited the construction site for a new Community Centre in Cayon.

He outlined some of the features of the new facility which will include additional offices for a post office, a computer laboratory and a library.

He noted that the new facility will enhance the reading and computer skills and the overall knowledge base of the populace.

Cultural and other social activities will be encouraged at the multipurpose Cayon Community Centre.

SKNIS will present a feature on the full tour with Minister Liburd on future programming.
