Press Release

BRADES, Montserrat (June 24, 2011) – Montserrat’s Case Study on the implementation of the ASYCUDA World, customs system was discussed at the World Trade Organisation (WTO) Workshop on Thursday in Geneva.

Director of Regional Affairs & Trade Claude Hogan submitted the case study back in January to show how and why the implementation of the new customs system was necessary.

Montserrat, Anguilla and Turks & Caicos benefited from 169,000 Euros from the European Community to upgrade to the latest version of the Automated Systems Customs Data, ASYCUDA World.

Montserrat began the transition to the new system in October 2010 and ASYCUDA World became fully operational by December 2010.

The project, still in its pilot phase is being managed by UNCTAD Representative Terrence Leonard, who is overseeing the implementation and training of the local customs agents.

The full text of the report is available at
http://www.gov.ms/wp-content/uploads/2011/02/Montserrat-Aid-For-Trade-WTO.pdf. The case studies from Montserrat and other beneficiary nations can be accessed from www.aid4trade.org.

Hogan says the documents highlight Montserrat’s future training needs but more importantly “the achievement is by itself regarded as major in trade enhancement terms. A next step now is to increase Montserrat's external trade flows.

The Aid-for-Trade Initiative aims to help developing countries maximize the benefits from trade opportunities. Since 2007 the OECD and WTO have jointly compiled ‘Aid for Trade at a Glance’ reports showing how this aid has been distributed and how effective it has been.
