Basseterre, St. Kitts (July 20, 2004): Minister with responsibility for lands Hon. Cedric Liburd stressed that his government remains committed to improving the quality of life of all citizens.
The comments were made during a visit to one of the many housing construction sites on island.
Minister Liburd noted that his government feels that persons must be able to live comfortably on good land in serene and peaceful areas. He explained that the private sector has an important role to play in this initiative.
“We have had the companies of Komla, Clico, T.D.C. and others seeking to construct houses,” he stressed. Komla is due to construct 400 homes at the White House area.
The minister of lands revealed that financing for persons interested in acquiring homes is available via loans at the St. Kitts and Nevis Development Bank.
An important aspect of the housing plan is job creation. Minister Liburd stressed that there are numerous opportunities for local contractors, construction workers, electricians and others to seize.
“We are creating work within the communities,” he said. “I am happy that Komla and Clico have agreed that the labour force will be from St. Kitts.” This will complement the efforts of the National Housing Corporation which hires locals to perform the related house building duties.
Minister Liburd cited the positive financial records of various firms and explained that the booming construction industry has created an environment where various private sector agencies have benefitted.
