Last day at Ivor Walters Primary School |
(Charlestown, Nevis) – On Friday July 6th schools on Nevis closed after an unusually long 15-week school term.
The 15-week school term was the result of an interruption of classes by the ICC World Cup Cricket matches which were held in St. Kitts in March earlier this year. As a result of this the first school term would have consisted of fifteen weeks, the second school term of nine weeks and the final school term of another fifteen weeks.
Education officials were forced to shorten the second term for all schools in the Federation and extend the third term to make allowances for the upcoming Cricket World Cup matches in St. Kitts and Nevis in March.
However, according to Principal of the Ivor Walters Primary School Mr. Wakely Daniel a midterm break was given during the last term to accommodate teachers.
“Teachers were given some time off from 23rd- 28th May, 2007. It was felt that they would need a break after 15 weeks of work. All in all it was a challenging year, but That which does not kill you will make you stronger”, said Mr. Daniel.
Also sharing these sentiments was Mrs. Allison Owens-Hill, former principal of the Lynn Jeffers School who is currently working as the Guidance Counselor at the Ivor Walters Primary School.
“I think that the school term was challenging with the World Cup and change of schedule. Other than that it was a learning experience for students and teachers alike. Now that we are vacation I feel relieved although I am not on vacation”, said Mrs. Owens-Hill.
She continued, “I am still working with some behaviorally challenged students to ensure that they are kept busy during the vacation with a summer program. I am looking forward to next year for some new programs that Guidance Counselors will be implementing next year.”
~~Adz:Left~~Schools on Nevis closed on Friday July 6th, and will reopen after an 8-week vacation on September 3rd, 2007. However, teachers will report back to school one week before on August 27th, 2007 to prepare for the upcoming school year.
