Charlestown Nevis (July 20, 2004) The graduating class of 1984 of the Charlestown Secondary School made a significant contribution to the school on Tuesday July 20, as they reflected on some twenty years ago at school.

The graduants, who are currently celebrating a week of activities, during the period July 18 to 24, under the theme “Embracing Our Past and Looking to the Future,” presented a computer system with a printer as part of the package to the Deputy Principal of the Charlestown Secondary School (CSS), Mr. Edison Elliot.

Mr. Iroy Pinney, who spoke on behalf of the group, noted that it was his honour and privilege to be given the task, saying, “As we reflect on our times in school, we realized that the contribution that CSS had made and we see it now as the nursery for the education of our youths here in Nevis.”

He presented the gift to Mr. Elliot and observed that it was a top of the line gift coming from a great group of persons.  “On behalf of the graduating class of 1984, we would like to present to you this computer that you can use within the school to improve the basic needs and teaching strategies of our youngsters.”

Mr. Elliot in accepting the gift on behalf of the school, expressed his sincere gratitude to the graduants, and pointed out that when the school reviewed what happened in the year 2003/2004, they recognised that there was a great demand for computers.  “The Multi-purpose Center has made a demand for over 20 computers and we had demands coming from other departments,” he said.

“What the students who graduated in 1984 had been able to do,” said Elliot, “is to bridge that gap between what we would be able to present to our teachers and students in September 2004.  We will be able to bridge that gap because of the contribution made by the students of 1984.”

In addition, the class also embarked on an enhancement project, whereby they planted a royal palm tree at the front of the school in an effort of assisting with the beautification of the school’s ground.

Meanwhile, a church service was held as part of the week of activities, at the Combermere Methodist Church, in memory of one of their classmates who passed away some time ago.   They made a presentation during the service to the mother of the deceased.

Other activities included an award ceremony hosted by Premier Vance Amory, who was then, the principal of the school.  They presented awards to the principals, office staff and teachers who nurtured them during their time at the Charlestown Secondary School.
