A Cable & Wireless customer in St. Kitts & Nevis has been selected the Grand Prize winner of a regional Text 2 Win competition.  Mr Quinton Griffin could not conceal his delight when Cable & Wireless’ Marketing Manager, Bibiana Henry first announced the news to him a week ago.  In fact, in his account, he could not immediately recall which text competition he may have won, saying that in recent times he had participated in at least two or three.

“I don’t believe this is luck.  I have told my mother that this is God’s doing,” said the 18 year old graduate of the Clarence Fitzroy Bryant College in St. Kitts.  Mr Griffin was presented with his Grand Prize winnings totaling over EC$11,000 at a presentation ceremony held at the Ocean Terrace Inn on Tuesday 20th, July 2004.  Members of the local electronic and print media in St. Kitts and Nevis covered the presentation, which was attended by executives of Cable & Wireless as well as Mr Griffin’s mother – Grace Griffin.

At the presentation ceremony, Vice President of Consumer Sales, Mobile and Marketing at Cable & Wireless St. Kitts & Nevis, Mr David Lake, highlighted the extensive ways that text messaging can be used as a medium of communication.  “Competitions like the one that we are celebrating today is just one of the many ways that text messaging or SMS can be used for, but it is also a useful business tool.”  Mr Lake also pointed out the recent reduction in the cost of text messaging adding, “Cable & Wireless is ensuring that the service is now more affordable with the 50% reduction in sending SMS messages.”
The Texting campaign asked customers to vote for their favorite all time West Indies cricketer from a Short List of 15 players that was provided.  To vote for the player, the customer had to enter the player’s initials and send the text to 7575.  The contest received 35,000 entries.

The lucky customer revealed that he voted for Michael Holding, as he admired him for his in-depth knowledge of the game and his continued contribution via the medium of television broadcasting.

Mr Griffin will travel with his mother to the UK on Saturday 24th July where he is expected to attend the Scotiabank West Indian Jubilee Gala in Birmingham, as well as the first day of the Edgbaston Test Match between England and the West Indies.
