Basseterre, St. Kitts (July 16, 2007): “It is heartening that in a world where persons are becoming rapidly more individualistic and self centred, we still have those who measure their achievements by the contributions they have made to community development.”
This was the view shared by Permanent Secretary of Gender Affairs, Community and Social Development Mr. Ian Liburd as his ministry officially recognized Pastor Kelvin C. Jones for 40 years of community service.
In a brief ceremony on Friday, the ministry outlined Pastor Jones’ sterling performance and his long history of assorted contributions. Born in Nevis, he moved to St. Kitts at the age of two with his parents. Later in life he was greatly transformed at a church meeting conducted by Dr. William Connor where he felt the call of God on his life.
Forty years later he continues to reach out to his community, with sharing the virtues of good morals, holy living and practical life. Many recall him telling them saying such as “Pull yourself up by your own boot straps, make something of yourself; get a good education and save something for a rainy day.” ~~Adz:Right~~
Among his notable achievements was his constant leadership of Vacation Bible School as well as his active participation in establishing the first Baptist Church in St. Kitts.
Additional community work included skills training and academic classes at Lodge; Free dental and eye care as well as blood work and sugar checks.
His inputs continued as he introduced the first drip irrigation system in the Federation. He received no salary from the church so agriculture was his source of income when building his home.
The ministry was pleased to honour him as a person who was wiling to sacrifice his own comfort for the welfare of others.
