Roseau Dominica, June 30th, 2011 - Charice Augustine Twelve year old Charice Augustine of the Goodwill Primary School has topped the 2011 Grade Six National Assessment formerly referred to as the Common Entrance Exams.

Chief Education Officer Stephenson Hyacinth announced the results at a press conference on the morning of Monday, June 27, 2011.

“The top performers in the 2011 Examinations were: Charice J. Augustine – Goodwill Primary, Karen S.M. George – St. Martin’s Primary, Dalan T. Riviere – St. Mary’s Primary, Asaf W.F. Telemacque – Wesley Primary, Dane D. Charles – W.S. Stevens – Marigot.”

This year one thousand one hundred and twenty-eight (1 128) students including five hundred and thirty-two (532) boys and five hundred and ninety-six (596) girls wrote the examinations.

Chief Education Officer, Steve Hyacinth In the meanwhile, the Ministry of Education announced on Monday that Government has increased the number of scholarships granted this year. A total of ninety-four (94) scholarships were given compared to eighty-six (86) last year.

“On the basis of this year’s results, Government has decided to award ninety-four (94) scholarships to all students who obtained: 4 A’s or 3 A’s + 1 B, or 3 A’s + 1 C or 2 A’s + 2 B’s. Bursaries are awarded to one hundred and fifteen (115) students who obtained the equivalent of 4 B’s or better but did not qualify for the award of scholarships.”

The amount allocated to scholars and bursaries for textbooks and stationery is five hundred (XCD$500.00) and three hundred dollars (XCD$300) respectively.

Hyacinth says the increase in the number of scholarships granted this year by government was based on better performance of students this year.

Meantime Hon. Education Minister, Petter St. Jean, is encouraged by the results of this year’s grade six national assessment.

“I want to point out here, today, that the results of the Grade Six National Assessment Examination show clearly that generally, our schools are doing well and I want to comment the principals and the various teachers around the island who continue to work with our students.”

Hon. Minister for Education  and Human Resource Development, Petter Saint Jean While the ministry is recording steady growth among students sitting the Grade Six National Assessment, the Education Minister is concerned about the fact that girls continue to outperform boys in the Examinations.

Minister Saint Jean is therefore appealing to fathers to take a more proactive role in assisting their boy children in excelling at school.

“I want to call on the males of society. It is of paramount importance that we, as fathers, play our role and we take up our responsibilities seriously.

Our young men are in need of good role models and it is necessary for the fathers of society, the fathers of Dominica to take the whole issue of fathering these children that are given to us seriously.”

As a means of improving national results, the Ministry is prepared to have school supervisors work with management of schools as a means of stepping up performance of schools island wide at the national assessments.
