Sandy Pointers demonstrate cooperative spirit in clean-up campaign

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – RESIDENTS of Sandy Point will soon to be engaged in a massive clean-up campaign aimed at returning the town to its natural state of beauty.

This initiative is the brainchild of a group called Community Improvement Personal Empowerment Organisation (CIPEO) that was formed in that town some three years ago.

In an exclusive interview with SKNVibes, Kerinda Warner, a member of the organisation, said a town hall meeting was recently held in the St. Anne’s Church Hall in Sandy Point where it was decided that residents should cooperatively embark on a clean-up drive to beautify the town.

Warner had chaired the meeting and noted that among the participants were the Operations Manager of Solid Waste Management Corporation (SWMC), Wilmon McCall and representatives of the Royal St. Christopher and Nevis Police Force (RSCNPF), St. Kitts and Nevis Fire (SKNFRS) and Rescue Services, the Combined Churches and Sandy Pointers Inspiring Real Improvement Throughout (SPIRIT).

Warner told this media house that it was unanimously decided at the meeting to establish a six-member committee to coordinate the project and she was nominated Coordinator.

The five other members of the committee are Pastor Clive Saunders representing the Combined Churches, Dale Charles representing all football clubs of the town, Sergeant Lorenzo representing the RSCNPF and the SKNFRS, Alanderson Selkridge representing the Sandy Point Agricultural Cooperative Society, and Cahita Crooke representing SPIRIT.

“Each committee member was given specific assignments for the clean-up campaign and we will be meeting in a week from July 1 to plan what our next move should be. We are however asking all residents of Sandy Point not to wait for the official word from the committee to start the project. Instead, they can start the clean-up campaign from their respective residence,” Warner said.

Warner informed that the project is geared at trimming overhanging trees along the town’s thoroughfares; the cutting of grass and shrubs on derelict properties; the removal of old refrigerators, stoves and furniture, among other items, from private and public properties; and the removal of graffiti sprayed on sidewalks, walls and buildings.

She also informed that a request was made to SWMC to provide large receptacles in which the thrash would be placed and that the public would be notified of the days and time of collection.

Warner said tools for cutting grass and shrubs as well as paint and brushes would be needed to complete the task ahead, and that members of the general public who are interested in contributing towards the project could contact her at 660-4869 or 466-2948, or any member of the Coordinating Committee.
