BRADES, Montserrat, June 30, 2011 – Several members of local media houses met Tuesday with Dr. Allyson Leacock, Executive Director of the Caribbean Broadcast Media Partnership on HIV/AIDS to learn about best practices for HIV/AIDS reporting.

Participants had the opportunity to view the UNESCO interactive tool on the iliveup.com website and view video reports and features from Caribbean reporters who produce stories in line with the recommended standards for reporting about HIV/AIDS.

Dr. Leacock said “the workshop provided an opportunity to stimulate and sensitize broadcasters to some of the current issues and how they can cover some of those issues more creatively and effectively.”

Commenting on the benefits of the workshop, Dr. Leacock went on to say that “increasingly as we have more workshops like this I think reporters begin to see the difference.  I try to show reports where reporters have done an excellent job in being balanced. We also try to share the resources that are available to reporters to go in and see best practices but also to learn more about the terminologies that are best used.”

She further stated, “In one section of the iliveup website we have information on how to interview a person living with HIV; both for the person conducting the interview and the person living with HIV.

Dr. Leacock said she felt the objectives of the session were met and that having Head of the STI HIV-AIDS Committee Mrs. Angela Skerritt in attendance was also important in providing the local perspective.

Skerritt was full of praise for the local media and their willingness over the years to support initiatives to educate the public about HIV and AIDS.  The CBMP official encouraged the local broadcasters to submit more content to air on LIVE Up: The Show.
