Basseterre, St. Kitts (July 28, 2004):
A five-member delegation leaves the Federation tomorrow to promote the unique cultural and social identity of St. Kitts and Nevis.

The group of three young men and two young women will participate at the 2004 Commonwealth Youth Exchange in Trinidad and Tobago from July 29 to August 11. The event is organised by the Commonwealth Youth Programme Caribbean Centre (CYPCC) and is designed to increase awareness and appreciation for the varying lifestyles of member states. Persons from across the region will attend the youth exchange programme.

Delegate Chevaughn Richards told SKNIS that the group is proud to represent the Federation at this function. Ms. Richards will be joined by Samal Duggins, Kerise Watson, Juliane Johnson and Dwayne Rawlins.

They will travel with numerous information packages on the educational, infrastructural, cultural and social developments of the twin-island nation. Data on tourism and government as well as state symbols such as the national dress, dish, flag, flower and anthem will also be presented at a booth.

Most of the local delegation will attend workshops and engage in other interactive sessions which will take place in different communities in Trinidad. Some delegates will be attending sessions in Tobago before joining their counterparts in Trinidad.  Delwayne Rawlins will join the two dozen regional representatives chosen to take part in the Tobago programme.

There will be an opportunity for all delegates to visit Tobago which stages the Tobago Heritage Festival at this time of year. This event is described as a major cultural undertaking characteristic of the island by the CYPCC.

Ms. Richards said she is eager to interact with the different people and sample the rich Caribbean culture of neighbouring islands. The young woman thanked the Department of Youth in the Ministry of Information, Culture, Youth and Sport for giving her the opportunity to share ideas and promote unity within the subregion.

The local delegates were chosen due to their continued involvement with youth related activities. The 2004 Youth Exchange Programme is being held under the theme “Experiencing Caribbean Culture for Development.”
