St Kitts/Nevis Business Reengineering Workshop pinpoints role of Leaders

Press Release

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts, 30 June 2011 – The St Kitts/Nevis National ICT Centre is hailing as “an absolute success” the national workshop on business process re-engineering recently held by the Ministry of Sustainable Development.

Facilitated by Trinidad-based TSG Consulting Ltd., the workshop was specially tailored to help national leaders translate reform policies and programs into concrete action plans. TSG Consulting is the Caribbean arm of UK-based consulting firm Congress Global Consulting (CGC), international specialists in leadership transformation and nations development training and strategy.

In his remarks to open the workshop on June 20th, Christopher Herbert, acting director of the National ICT Centre, had explained that Congress Global Consulting was selected to conduct the significant intervention because of its “unique focus on values-based nations development and leadership driven change”.

Titled 'Business Process Re-engineering (BPR) and Change Management: the Leadership Imperative', the workshop was held at the National ICT Centre in the capital city of Basseterre with over twenty-five participants representing the senior officers and executives of both the public and private sectors.

The Federation of St Kitts and Nevis has endorsed the use of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) to drive national competitiveness and ensure efficient delivery of more secure and transparent government services. The government of the small, twin-island Caribbean state has also recognized that process re-engineering is a prerequisite for automation of the delivery of government services.

Janet Harris, Financial Secretary St Kitts/Nevis participated in the program. She stated, “Programs such as these are important to development of the Federation. My team left, not only with technical knowledge, but with a new appreciation for values-based leadership.”

The positive feedback we received from the participants was very encouraging,” stated Camille Wooding, Managing Director, TSG Consulting. “The linkage between the organization development we wish to see and leadership required to achieve it became clearer to all throughout the workshop.”

She facilitated the weeklong event, along with CGC experts Ernest King and Bevil Wooding. Mr. King, Director of Organizational Transformation at CGC, stated, “BPR is about managing people as well as processes. The workshop focused on the role of leadership in effecting and managing change.

We also examined proven techniques and tools that the participants can use to conduct leadership driven BPR initiatives in their organizations.” Mr Wooding explained that attention to leadership was a prerequisite for the removal of bottlenecks, arcane procedures and systemic inefficiencies:

“The growing regional call for good governance and greater transparency has created an urgent need for governments as well private sector and civil society organizations to adopt new leadership models if we are to benefit from the promise of the technology.”

He added, “In implementing ICT-based development, organizations sometimes make the mistake of focusing on the ‘ICT’ and forgetting about the ‘development’. We are seeking to introduce considerations that are relevant not only the St Kitts Nevis context, but to the wider Caribbean.”

Mr. Herbert, commended the presenters for blending practical technical expertise with values-based leadership principles. In his closing remarks he shared “We are looking forward to seeing the impact of this program in the day-to-day operations of the government agencies and private sector organisations that participated”.
