Exciting times for our Young People, says PS Community Development, Culture and Gender Affairs

Press Release

BASSETERRE ST.Kitts, July 4th, 2011 - The Ministry of Community Development, Culture and Gender Affairs is delighted to share in the accomplishments of the young people of St. Kitts-Nevis.

Our staff members and the National Carnival Committee were elated to learn that Iantavian Queeley captured the Ms. Carival Crown in St. Vincent in the wee hours of 2nd July.

She is the sixth Kittitian beauty to enjoy this prestigious title. With her usual poise and elegance, Ms. Queeley was able to amass the most points in all but two segments and at the end of the evening was named the overall winner.

Kittitians and Nevisians are very proud as it is the first time in over 10 years since we have been able to celebrate this victory.  Minister Liburd joins with her family, friends and well-wishers to congratulate Ms. Iantavian Queeley on her excellent performance and representation of St. Kitts-Nevis.

More congratulations are extended to Ms. Heidi Slack, director of the Fire Flies Dance School, for masterminding such an “edutaining” production at the Sir Cecil Jacobs Auditorium at the Eastern Caribbean Central Bank on Sunday 3rd July.

The theme, PLAYTIME, was aptly chosen as it sought to remind us of the importance of play in our children’s development.  Highlights of the production were the ring games and the different fun activities children enjoy.

The Daddy daughter dance was a favourite of the Honourable Marcella Liburd and Permanent Secretary, Sharon Rattan.  Ms. Slack must be commended for her dedication and leadership in promoting dance and providing a positive and healthy lifestyle amongst our young children.

Dance is the art form which is quickly alighting the interests of young women in our communities and the Department of Culture is therefore pleased to award two partial scholarships to two young ladies, Ms. Desi Brown, a member of LEAP and Ms. Leburnah Liburd, member of the VIVACE DANCE COMPANY.

Motivated by their love for dance and passionate about improving their skill set, these two young ladies set about raising funds and seeking sponsorship to attend a four week summer course at the renowned Edna Manley College of the Visual and Performing Arts in Jamaica.

During the annual summer programme Ms. Brown and Ms. Liburd will be exposed to both technique and theory in Modern Dance, Folk, Jazz and other Social Dance Styles.

Upon their return to St. Kitts, both ladies will collaborate with the Department of Culture to organize a similar local course for dancers ensuring that the skills, techniques and information garnered in Jamaica is shared with as many persons as possible.

On behalf of the Ministry and the Honourable Marcella Liburd, we wish to encourage our young people to continue to participate in positive and healthy lifestyle activities and wish them success in their endeavours.
