ROADTOWN Tortola, BVI, July 5th, 2011 - The school which becomes the 12th school to be adopted by a company was officially adopted under the Ministry of Education and Culture’s Adopt-A-School Programme and received an initial monetary contribution of $2,500 from its adopter.

    – A Song and the smiles of students greeted the family of the late Enid Scatliffe as they adopted the Enid Scatliffe Pre-primary School.

In a short ceremony held on the school’s grounds this week, Minister for Education and Culture Hon. Andrew Fahie praised the Scatliffe Family for their contribution to the Territory’s education system by way of their adoption. The Minister further extolled the programme as he has in the past saying, “There is nowhere in the world that Government can do it all on its own. When Government works with businesses, parents, schools and the community as a whole we can achieve more.”

The Scatliffe family’s donation is special to the programme as the donors are directly related to the late Enid Scatliffe the namesake for the school.

The formal adoption culminates years of informal and unpublicized contributions to the school by the family. Over the years, the family has made contributions to establish the school’s computer laboratory and each year students are gifted with writing utensils bearing the school’s name that are paid for by the family.

The ceremony also incorporated special moments which included a song from the students at the school and a special ceremony to present the cheque to the school.

The cheque for $2, 500 was relayed from four members of the Scatliffe family who represented four generations of the family and then was passed to the three past principals, Mrs. Eugenie Donovan-Glasgow, Ms. Cecily Malone and Mrs. Gladys Scatliffe and finally to current principal Mrs. Valerie Charles-Welsh who thanked the family for their thoughtfulness and support over the years.

Mrs. Jeanette Scatliffe- Boynes called the moment very touching and “indicative of the close relationship the family has created with the school”.

Remarks were also given by Chairman of the Adopt-A-School Committee Mrs. Carlene Parsons, District Representative Hon. Elvis Harrigan and Mr. Collin Scatliffe also made remarks on behalf of the Scatliffe family.
The Adopt-A-School Programme was formally launched by the Ministry of Education and Culture in October, 2007.

Several schools had been adopted previously to the programme’s introduction, but the formal programme is the Ministry’s initiative to answer calls from the business community to provide accountability and transparency on for the use of donor funds.

A total of 12 primary schools have already been adopted under this programme of which the main purpose is to provide a necessary link between schools and donor organisations, to educate and ensure that each school environment is conducive to a dynamic learning experience.
