Press Release

ROADTOWN Tortola BVI, July 7th, 2011 - The meeting is scheduled to begin promptly at 4pm and seeks to empower stakeholders and residents to take ownership of and address environmental issues in Cane Garden Bay such as flooding, run-off and water quality.

The Conservation and Fisheries Department invites residents and stakeholders of Cane Garden Bay to a meeting aimed at forming an Environmental Action Committee at the Ivan Dawson Primary School hall this Sunday, July 10.

Chief Conservation and Fisheries Officer, Mr. Bertrand Lettsome, encourages community members to attend. “This is a critical time for Cane Garden Bay. We are actually witnessing that as the environment goes, so goes the Bay. Correcting the issues will take more than Government intervention; it will take the community really getting involved and taking ownership.”

Once the Environmental Action Committee is formed, it is expected to facilitate change through a series of exciting and innovative community-based and managed projects. At the meeting, the committee’s goals, functions, structure and membership will be discussed and community based projects and proposals will be shared in detail.

The Conservation and Fisheries Department is working on a number of project proposals to address priority environmental issues in Cane Garden Bay. These include the development of a ‘Beach Management Plan’, a ‘Flood Action Plan’, a ‘Guide to Flood Resilience’, a permeable pavement demonstration project, which reduces water run off, and the Vetiver grass runoff control system; which is a specialised hedging that aids in controlling soil erosion.

Persons requiring more information should contact Ms. Angela Burnett Penn via email address abpenn@gov.vg or Ms. Atoya George via email address atgeorge@gov.vg. Persons may also telephone the Conservation and Fisheries Department directly at 494-3429.

The Conservation and Fisheries Department stands ready to support the Environmental Action Committee in the planning and implementation of projects that serve to promote the sustainable management of the Territory’s natural resources.
