ROADTOWN Tortola BVI, July 7th, 2011 - This year, the programme will be held at two locations: From July 11 – 22 at the Conservation and Fisheries Department Conference Room on Tortola and from July 25 – 29 on Jost Van Dyke.

The Territory’s students will have the opportunity to explore their environment when the Conservation and Fisheries Department hold their annual Environmental Summer Programme this month under the theme, ‘Connect with Nature: Explore the BVI.’

As part of the Tortola programme, students will attend field trips to Sage Mountain, Salt Island and Jost Van Dyke. Students will also visit by boat, the mangroves at the Paraquita Bay Lagoon and use real compasses to find hidden treasures buried at the Joseph Reynold O’Neal Botanic Gardens.

The Jost Van Dyke students will take field trips to Virgin Gorda in addition to their on-island excursions and both groups will take part in arts and crafts activities.

Environmental Education Officer Mrs. Cynara Duncan said the objective of the summer programme is “to enlighten the youths about the Virgin Islands and their natural environment. It is very important that they experience their surroundings and this summer programme provides an ecstatic experience that will take them from the land to the sea.”

Keeping with the United Nations declaration of 2011 as the International Year of Forests, Mrs. Duncan said, “Students will learn about the traditional uses of forests and the different types of forest which exist in the VI. They will also be taught about beach safety, safety at sea and forest animals that exist locally.

Registration cost is $55.00 and covers a free t-shirt, compass, cap and water bottle. It also includes the cost of the off-island trips. Students must be registered by July 8 to attend the environmental summer programme.

The Conservation and Fisheries Department stands ready to train and engage youth on the local environment to aid in the development of environmental responsible citizens.
