~~Adz:Left~~The People’s Action Movement has planned a massive March for Democracy to be held on Friday 17th August through the streets of Basseterre from Greenlands to the Bay Road to protest the continued assault on our democracy being perpetrated by this Labour Administration. This demonstration is one of a series of actions that are planned to give the people a chance to make their voices heard on this critical issue and to demand that this Government adhere to the recommendations made by the people to the Newton Committee.

A series of meetings have been planned to raise public consciousness about this pressing issue. The first two, in Market Street on Sunday and in Cayon on Monday, were very successful. The crowds came out in their numbers and were very vocal about this issue in particular as well as other problems with Labour mis – management. Despite light rain on both evenings and a laughable blackout on Monday the crowds were in good spirits and enthusiastic about the upcoming demonstration. The crowd very much controlled both meetings by raising issues for the speakers to discuss. The majour issues raised were strenuous objections to the very idea of voters registering at embassies, missions and consulates overseas, the proposed national ID card without fingerprint and the gerrymandering of the constituency boundaries.

There is strong consensus that any registration of voters in any place other than the Electoral Offices in Basseterre or Charlestown will undermine the principle of one man one vote and derail the democratic process in the Federation. Throughout both meetings the crowd continually said that current events vindicated the principled decision of the People’s Action Movement to boycott the entire process.
