St. Kitts under flashflood warning

By: Terresa McCall, SKNVibes.com

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – RESIDENTS of the Federation of St. Christopher and Nevis and neighbouring Anguilla are asked to pay keen attention to the current inclement weather being experienced and to note that a flashflood warning has been effected.

According to an advisory issued by the St. Kitts Meteorological Office, Antigua and Barbuda’s Met Office has indicated that a flashflood warning is in effect for the three islands, specifically for the “low lying flood-prone areas”.

The warning, as explained by a release from the local Met Office, means that “moderate to major flooding is imminent or occurring in low lying and flood prone areas”.

Residents of these areas are asked to seek refuge at higher grounds expeditiously.

“If you are in the warning area, move quickly to higher ground immediately. Residents living along streams, creeks, low lying and flood prone areas should take immediate precautions to protect life and property. Do not attempt to cross swiftly flowing waters or waters of unknown depth by foot or by vehicle. Note, just one foot of flowing water is enough to sweep vehicles off the road. When encountering flooded roads be extremely cautious, and if in doubt, make the smart choice, turn around don’t drown, move to higher ground,” the release states.

Information sourced by SKNVibes from the local Met Office indicates that between 8:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. yesterday (July 7), approximately 1.33 inches of rainfall was recorded.

The rain, which led to the imposition of the flashflood warning, is as a result of a tropical wave and an accompanying upper level trough that is over the Leeward and British Virgin Islands.

Effects of the tropical wave were expected to continue into last evening and the Met Office has noted that the situation would continue to be monitored.
