Zodiac Henry and Jomitri Queeley were selected as the inaugural recipients of the 2011 William Marcus Natta Memorial Scholarship. Henry is a fifth grader who has an ambition to become either a teacher or nurse. Queeley is a sixth grader who will graduate in 2011 and is a skilled athlete who plays cricket, football and basketball. The two students were selected for their impressive academic accomplishments, financial need and demonstration of civic awareness and sound moral character.

True to the motto “A Helping Hand Along Your Way,” which guides the Fund’s operation, the Fund Chairman Marcus L. Natta, PhD presented the students with a financial reward as well as an engraved trophy in recognition and support of their accomplishments. The presentation took place July 5th in the Tucker-Clarke Primary School auditorium.

The Honourable Dr. Earl Asim Martin, parliamentary representative for Constituency One was present at the ceremony and described the Fund as “a timely contribution to our community and country. It is something worthy of emulation,” said Dr. Martin.

In presenting the awards, Dr. Natta noted, “Life presents many challenges and struggles, particularly for this young generation. When they are faced with these obstacles, they often hope that someone is there to help. Whether it’s a teammate helping you up when you fall during a netball game or a teacher asking a student to help her carry books to the reading centre or a child helping a parent by washing the dishes after dinner.”

“At the Fund, we believe that everyone deserves a helping hand. Our Scholarship Fund seeks to be that teammate, teacher, or parent helping students on their academic journey from primary education to secondary education.”

Tucker-Clarke principal Sylvester Charles urged the scholarship winners and other students to view the Fund as an opportunity and encouraged them to pursue excellence, despite their humble beginnings.
