Press Release

ROADTOWN Tortola, BVI, July 11, 2011 - Music and art schools in Hertsfordshire County, London, got a taste of British Virgin Islands (BVI) culture when Mr. Enriquito “Quito” Rymer enchanted an audience of young people with his acoustic guitar performance, creative artwork collection and painting tips.

Mr. Rymer’s visit to the schools on June 29 came under the heels of the Territory Day Reception and Art and Culture Show held at BVI House on June 28 where he debuted his ‘Phoenix Collection: Rising from the Ashes’.

According to the Director of BVI London Office Mr. Kedrick Malone, one of the objectives of the art and culture show is to provide greater opportunities for local artists to network and to get exposure to the art community outside of the BVI House exhibition.

Mr. Rymer’s visit is linked to the expanded relationship that the BVI London Office is working toward establishing with Hertsfordshire County which already has a relationship with the BVI Olympic Committee (BVIOC) to assist athletes with free training. In June 2009, BVIOC and the Hertfordshire is Ready for Winners Partnership (HRFWP) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU).

This MOU facilitates BVIOC operating Pre-Games Training Camps in Hertfordshire prior to BVI athletes competing in the London 2012 Olympic Games. Mr. Malone said, “We found it necessary to solidify and build on that relationship and at the same time provide the opportunity for Quito to establish a relationship with the art community,”

Mr. Malone stressed that the Hertfordshire visit is the beginning of an expanded partnership with the Government of the Virgin Islands which is expected to be finalised shortly. The cultural showcase was organised by Herts 2012 Manager Mr. Gareth Morgan as part of the Hertfordshire is Ready for Winners Partnership.

Mr. Morgan said, “Hertfordshire stands ready to participate in similar exchanges and looks forward to an enhanced relationship with BVI public sector.”Mr. Rymer’s visit started at the Turnford School where he conducted an art master class with a group of students who were intrigued with his exhibition brochure. He discussed his inspiration associated with the pieces and then had the class sketch one of his works ‘The Hat Maker’.

“I was quite impressed by the level of interpretation students were able to bring to my drawing,” Mr. Rymer said.
In his visit to Sele School where there were a number of aspiring guitarists, Mr. Rymer intrigued the learners with his acoustic playing in various Caribbean genres.

In an interactive session with the students he impressed upon them the importance of remaining focused and embracing positive behaviours while following their passion for music.

He also took the opportunity to give a brief chat about Virgin Islands life and some of his influences as an artist and songwriter.Additionally, Mr. Rymer also visited students at the Roundwood Primary School in Harpenden where a small group of steel pan players performed.

Mr. Rymer visited the Hatfield House, the home of the seventh Marquess and Marchioness of Salisbury and their family. The Estate is about 400 years old and amongst the most treasured collection is an original copy of the King James Bible.

The BVI London Office represents the interests of the Government and people of the Virgin Islands in the UK and Europe.
