Press Release

BASSETERRE St. Kitts, July 12th 2011  – The official opening ceremony of the NAGICO-sponsored East Basseterre Football League took place on Sunday afternoon (10th July 2011) at the Newtown Sports Ground with a large crowd of spectators in attendance.

Mr. Rishi Singh, General Manager of NAGICO Insurances, spoke about his company’s willingness to partner with the East Basseterre community organizations.

“NAGICO Insurance Company Ltd is once again deeply honoured and extremely gratified to be a part of the East Basseterre Football League.  When we were approached by Mr. Don “Dango” Farrell last year, we were extremely delighted to partner with the East Basseterre Community in its efforts at youth development through sports.  And so we are back on board this year as the main sponsor,” stated Singh.

“NAGICO fully understands that sports provide an opportunity for our young people to develop not only their physical talents but their character as well.  This point underpins NAGICO’s philosophy and business practices and helps us to grow as a company totally committed to human development, especially the development of young people,” he added.

Singh also commended Mr. Don “Dango” Farrell and his team for their vision of and commitment to youth development through sports.  He said that NAGICO will continue to be a willing partner in youth development activities because the company takes great pride in giving back to the community. He congratulated all the participating teams and wished them a successful tournament.

Hon. Earl Asim Martin, Parliamentary Representative for East Basseterre, commended Mr. Farrell and his team for organizing the football league. He said that the league is important for building community spirit and helping to create building blocks to better understanding between young people.

Mr. Martin also spoke about the league’s importance in helping to inculcate discipline in young people and building character.  He encouraged the players to use the league as a springboard for other goals such as developing a career.

He also commended Mr. Singh and NAGICO for sponsoring the league.

“I think that in these difficult financial times for a company to come on board for a second time to sponsor a community football league is quite commendable,” he said.

President of the St. Kitts-Nevis Football Association, Lawyer Anthony Johnson, offered words of congratulations to the organizers and said that the league is critically important to youth development especially in today’s social environment and that the league is offering an important alternative to crime and violence.

“In a time like this when the national league is out of season I believe it is important to engage the young people in playing the sport,” said Johnson.  He encouraged the players to take the sport very seriously as there are many opportunities to be gained.

Johnson also congratulated Mr. Singh and NAGICO for sponsoring the League for the second year in succession.

Mr. Don “Dango” Farrell, principal organizer of the East Basseterre League expressed his thanks and appreciation to all persons and organizations for readily supporting the community league.  He made special mention of NAGICO Insurances for the company’s financial commitment and support in the East Basseterre community over the years.  He also congratulated the St. Kitts U23 Netballers on their recent victory and encouraged the footballers to emulate what the girls have accomplished through hard work and discipline.

The East Basseterre Football League was declared officially opened by Minister Asim Martin.  In the first game, South Side Ballers defeated Shottaz , five goals to 3.
