Basseterre, St. Kitts (August 05, 2004): A former peace corps official recently returned to St. Kitts and said he was impressed with the developments on island.

Andrew Gettig, vice president of Sport Court International is in St. Kitts for two days. He told SKNIS that he was stationed here in 1987 to 1989 and helped to introduce volleyball in schools in St. Kitts and Nevis.

“One student, I remember back then, was so excited to learn about the sport of volleyball and to get a chance to improve her game and play on a higher level,” he said naming Antoinette Henry. Mr. Gettig revealed that he was pleased to discover the progression of Ms. Henry as a player and the sport in general.

“Not only did St. Kitts go on to defend its title as the OECS Champions in volleyball, but team captain Antoinette Henry was voted MVP,” he said reminiscing about past results. He added that he recently attended a practice session for the national women’s team and was pleased with the quality techniques and skills on display.

Earlier today Mr. Gettig met with the Minister of Sport Hon. Jacinth Henry-Martin. They discussed the ongoing renovations being done to various sporting and cultural facilities. Gettig indicated that the number of community centres and other social and recreational facilities being built, speak to the dedication of the Minister and the Government in general, to empower citizens.

“To me that speaks to a commitment not only to (improve) the quality of life, but to (preserve) Kittitian culture,” he stressed. Mr. Gettig added that Kittitians have always shown great vision and cited the success of the nation to host Cricket World Cup matches in 2007 as testament to this fact.

“The minister and her permanent secretary are hard working, visionary people and I am glad they took the time out to include me in their morning,” he said after the meeting.
