Press Release

ROADTOWN Tortola,BVI, July 12th, 2011 -The Conservation and Fisheries Department (CFD) will host a follow-up meeting tomorrow with residents of Cane Garden Bay to formalise the establishment of an Environmental Action Committee.

Residents of Cane Garden Bay began discussions on July 10 on possible community-based solutions to respond to environmental concerns in the Bay.

Solutions presented at the meeting included a ‘Homeowner’s Guide to Flood Resilient Building’, landscaping and maintenance, a ghut maintenance protocol, a pilot project to install permeable pavement systems to control water run-off and grass hedges to manage excess sediment.

Additionally, the benefits of establishing an Environmental Action Committee, which would be an independent autonomous body for community residents, were also discussed.

Once established the Committee would collectively engage members in positive solutions to address flooding and sedimentation in the Bay area as well as other environmental issues such as beach and waste management.

The Conservation and Fisheries Department appeals to the wider Cane Garden Bay community to attend the meeting on Wednesday, July 13 to see first-hand the community-based solutions proposed. Residents can also share their suggestions for moving forward.

The meeting will be held at the Ivan Dawson Primary School Hall at 6pm and will discuss the Environmental Action Committee’s goals, focus areas, scope of activities, structure, membership and plans.

The Conservation and Fisheries Department supports the establishment of the Environmental Action Committee and other such initiatives to address environmental concerns and solutions.

As the Government’s arm responsible for the sustainable management of the Territory’s resources, the Ministry of Natural Resources and Labour and the Conservation and Fisheries Department remain committed to the good management and protection of our natural environment.
