BASSETERRE, ST. KITTS (JANUARY 25TH 2004) – Plans for the construction of a new highway in St. Kitts are closer to reality with the approval of financing of the project by the Caribbean Development Bank (CDB).
The regional lending institution has approved US$7,560,000 for the West Bypass Road.
The project is intended to reduce traffic congestion in Basseterre, the capital, decrease operating costs and contribute to improved safety for road users.
The CDB said the West Basseterre Bypass road involves the construction of approximately 3.8 kilometers of road in addition to four bridges and five roundabout/junctions.
The West Bypass Road will begin on the island’s main road in the area of the Joseph N. France General Hospital and end at the Kim Collins Highway near the Robert L. Bradshaw International Airport.
The development of a Traffic Management and Urban Improvement Plan for Basseterre, the acquisition of two portable weighbridges and new axle-load legislation also form part of the project.
The Caribbean Development Bank said its Board of Directors approved the loan for St. Kitts at a meeting at the Bank’s Headquarters in Barbados on December 11th 2003.
