Court Round Up – Nine Convicted at Traffic Court

    BASSETERRE, St. Kitts WHILE words of caution were issued for some transgressions of the Federation’s traffic laws, others were punished through the issuance of fines; the offenders will be made to temporarily reside at Her Majesty’s Prison if they fail to meet the court’s payment demands.

     

    The last session of Traffic Court was held on Thursday, July 7, 2011 at the Sir Lee Llewellyn Moore Judicial and Legal Services Complex, Basseterre, St. Kitts. During that session, nine individuals were convicted of committing traffic infractions.

     

    Presiding Magistrate, Her Worship Josephine Mallalieu-Webbe, convicted Desmond Hazel of Haynes Smith Village of driving without due care and attention and fined him $300 which is to be paid within two weeks or in default, serve one week imprisonment. The offence was committed on March 4, 2011.

     

    College Street resident Elmond Harvey was convicted of December 27, 2010 offences of driving without due care and attention and driving without insurance. On the first count, he was fined $300 to be paid within one day or serve one week imprisonment and on the second, he was cautioned.

     

    Driving without insurance and driving without a driver’s license, were the offences with which Babtundie Alarge of Cardin Avenue was charged. He was cautioned on the latter and on the former, fined $700 which is to be paid within one week or serve one month at Her Majesty’s Prison. The offences were committed on May 5, 2011.

     

    On February 16, 2011, Steve Richardson of Sandy Point was served with a $250 ticket for exceeding the speed limit which was to have been paid a specific time. Richardson paid the sum but did so after the specified date and as a result, was ordered by the court to pay an extra $50 forthwith.

     

    East Street, Newtown resident, Kendall Huggins, who was charged with failing to keep left at a round-about and driving without due care and attention, was cautioned on the latter offence and on the former he was fined $100 to be paid within two weeks. If he fails to pay the fine within the specified period, a one week custodial sentence would be imposed. The offences were committed on March 8, 2011.

     

    A $500 fine was imposed on St. Pauls resident Rayjorn Richards for committing a October 16, 2010 offence of driving without due care and attention. The sum must be paid within three months or a 14-day custodial sentence would be imposed.
     
    Tabernacle resident, Eric Halliday was fined $100 for February 18, 2011 offence of driving off the bus route. The sum was to have been paid within one day with an alternative of one week imprisonment.

     

    For having his vehicle’s windows too heavily-tinted and for having said vehicle fitted with unauthorized lights, Luchell Weekes of Bird Rock was fined $200 and $150 respectively.  Both sums were to have been paid within one day or in default, serve two weeks in prison on each count. The offences were committed on December 15, 2010.

     

    A $700 fine was imposed upon Narendra Ramnarine of St. Peters for a May 6, 2011 offence of driving when not covered by insurance. The sum is to be paid within two weeks or a custodial sentence of one month would be imposed. Ramnarine was also charged with driving an unlicensed vehicle but was cautioned on that count.
