Press & Public Relations, Nevis Island Administration

The Hon Vance Amory, Premier and Minister of Finance
Charlestown Nevis (August 12, 2004)  Nevis’ Premier the Hon Vance Amory has confirmed on Thursday August 12 that the public servants in Nevis will receive an increased remuneration at the end of the month.  He was at the time updating the government information service.

He noted that the Prime Minister, the Hon Dr Denzil Douglas had agreed to give a salary increase effective August 2004 of 10% across the board and that it was indicated that they will be a back pay to make the increase retroactive to January 2004.

Said Premier Amory: “When we had the consultation with the private sector in June, the matter was raised and I indicated that we also have to give a similar increase, for one specific reason, we are still part of a federation as a civil service, to all intense and purposes, it is one although we pay the civil servants in Nevis, yet it is under one umbrella which is governed by the Public Service Commission.”

Premier Amory indicated that the government had recognised the many calls for increases in salaries and that he wanted the workers in the public service to recognise that the government was coming out of a very difficult time, which spanned over the last six years.

He hopes that when the time comes for the people to make sacrifice that they will be prepared to do like wise, so that, “we can continue to grow along with the economy and improve the quality of life for all,” he said.

The Premier who is also the Minister of Finance noted that the Ministry of Finance had been mandated to find the source of funding and to prepare the necessary documents and releases.  It is expected to cost the government approximately 3 million dollars.
