ROADTOWN Tortola,BVI, July 15th, 2011 – Director of the BVI London Office Mr. Kedrick Malone officially handed over a $16,000 cheque to the BVI Olympic Committee in support of the Territory?s athletes competing in the 2012 London Olympic Games.

In the handover ceremony held at the BVI Olympic Committee?s headquarters yesterday, Mr. Malone said, “We are pleased to support the BVI Olympic Committee?s drive to raise funds through sponsorship.”
In March, the BVI Olympic Committee launched its “The BVI?s Road to London 2012” campaign to solicit funds for the Virgin Islands team to participate in athletics and sailing at the games.

According to Mr. Malone, the funds were raised on June 28 during a silent auction at the 2011 Territory Day Reception and Art and Culture Show at the BVI House in London where over 100 friends of the BVI and invited guests attended. Mr. Malone said, “The friends of the BVI were elated to contribute toward the Virgin Islands participation in the Olympic Games.”

He commended the BVI Olympic Committee for its outstanding work in promoting the talents of local athletes and added that the ongoing publicity along with the BVI London Office?s promotion of the silent auction has led to the BVI being the first Territory to be featured in the Diplomat magazine which profiled Mrs. Tahesia Harrigan- Scott on July 6.

In giving the BVI London Office, friends of the BVI and businesses a hearty congratulations for contributing to the cause, President of the BVI Olympic Committee Mr. Ephraim Penn said, “It?s a great pleasure to be on the receiving end … of this handsome donation and we promise to put it to good use,” adding that the BVI must be proud of its “high caliber of athletes.”

The Territory will be represented by Tahesia Harrigan, Ashley Kelly, Karene King and Chantel Malone in the Women?s 4×100 meter relay. Omar Jones and Alec W. Anderson will participate in the Men?s Javelin Throw and Sailing, respectively.

The donors of the silent auction included The Moorings, Long Bay Beach Resort, Sugar Mill Hotel, Leverick Bay Hotel and Vacation Villas, Guana Island, Dive BVI, Sail Caribbean Divers, Virgin Atlantic, Biras Creek Resort, Scrub Island Resort, Marriott Hotel, Ms. Anne Holloway and Mr. Enriquito “Quito” Rymer who donated an art piece from his „Phoenix Collection: Rising from the Ashes?.
