Social Security Makes a Sterling Donation to the Health Sector

    BASSETERRE St. Kitts, July 18th 2011 - On Thursday 14th July 2011, several pieces of equipment were officially handed over by the Social Security Board to the Ministry of Health on St. Kitts for use in the delivery of quality health care to the people of the Federation.

     

    The donation valued at just over two hundred thousand dollars ($200,000.00) is part of a continuing annual initiative of the Social Security Board to assist the Ministries of Health of both the Federal Government of St. Kitts and Nevis and the Nevis Island Administration in acquiring well needed equipment to boost their capacities to meet the needs of the health sector.

     

    In a ceremony which took place at the Newtown Health Centre, the Director of the Social Security Board, Mrs. Sephlin Lawrence made the presentation to Health Minister Hon. Marcella Liburd in the presence of several representatives of the Health Department, Social Security and members of the Federation’s media.

     

    Twenty-three miscellaneous types of equipment including hand-held Doppler machines, examination beds, wheelchairs, etc were on display at the ceremony.

     

    However, these were just a sampling of the total stock of items that were being made available. Several health centres and other medical facilities across the Federation will be the locations for use of the brand new stock of items.

     

    The ceremony was ably chaired by the Director of Social Security, Mrs. Sephlin Lawrence who gave the Welcome Remarks and highlighted that since the first donation in 1991, the Board has contributed over $5 million dollars worth of equipment to the Health Sector.  Ms. Eulynis Browne, Director of Community Nursing Services invoked God’s presence at the ceremony and remarks were delivered by the Chairman of the Social Security Board Mr. Halva Hendrickson.  Mr. Hendrickson disclosed that he was tremendously pleased with the quality of service and care provided by our Health Professionals and that the Board will continue to support the Ministry of Health in sustaining this commendable level of health care in St. Kitts and Nevis.

     

    Minister of Health the Hon Marcella Liburd accepted the donation on behalf of the people of the Federation and noted that the partnership between Social Security and Health is a significant one as the wealth of a nation is the health of its people.  The Minister thanked the Board for its contribution and promised that the equipment would be used to service the health care needs of the nation.

     

    Dr. Hazel Williams-Roberts gave the Vote of thanks after a demonstration of some of the equipment on show, and emphasized the need to sustain such a partnership between Social Security and the Ministry of Health.

     

    The Social Security Board is committed to its program of generous support of the health sector of St. Kitts and Nevis. The annual donation provides funding to the tune of EC$270,000.00 which is utilized for the procurement of valuable items identified by the Ministries of Health.
