Charlestown Nevis:- Nevis was one of the islands that joined other countries in the world who participated in the International Coastal Cleanup on Saturday, September 16.
Volunteers of all ages and from all walks of life turned out in great numbers and cleaned up 26 beaches. Miriam Knorr, the Coordinator of the annual event, said the event was gaining popularity. She said she was amazed by the number of children who were attracted to the exercise.
Another active group that participated was HOPE whose motto is to mobilise youth on the island of Nevis to participant in the development of their island.
SKNVibes caught up with volunteers at the newly opened Sunset Beach and Bar Restaurant where the volunteers had their lunch prepared by volunteers.
Volunteers played a critical role in the world's largest single-day volunteer effort to improve the health of the ocean and its wildlife. In addition to cleaning up waterways and beaches, volunteers collected important data on the types, quantity and location of marine debris that will lead to an ongoing effort to prevent marine debris through education and outreach all year. This data will be available early in 2008.
Miriam Knorr, the Coordinator, is looking forward to another successful International Coastal Cleanup in 2008!
