Litter from other islands and from cruise ships is reaching Nevis beaches, the local Coordinator, International Ocean Cleanup, Miriam Knorr said in an interview on Saturday.
“Some things are washing up from other islands. Three years ago, we found material from cruise lines,” Knorr said. She revealed that legislation is underway that may offer a litter plan that will protect individual islands’ beaches.
Knorr said the largest type of litter picked on Saturday were glass bottles. She gave the number as 646. All garbage collected is recorded and classified. Last year 396 plastic bags were collected after the cleanup exercise and 1450 plastic bottles.
According to Knorr, two years ago the volunteers had picked phone cards. Volunteers are grateful to phone companies for installing top up facilities.
“The International Coastal Cleanup engages people to remove trash and debris from the world’s beaches and waterways to help identify the source of debris and to help change behaviour that cause pollution,” she said.
She is encouraged that new groups continue to enlist to help clean up the environment. Some of the groups that enlisted this year included: Girl Guides, HOPE, Rotary Club, University, Medical University of the Americas. Knorr called on volunteers and the public at large to engage in cleanup as an everyday activity. She called on groups to adopt beaches and keep the clean.
