Basseterre, St. Kitts (August 12, 2004): The Federation’s support for the Republic of China on Taiwan was underscored in a presentation by Foreign Affairs Minister Hon. Dr. Timothy Harris at the 8th Annual Ministerial Meeting in Taiwan.
Minister Harris highlighted the impact of Taiwan’s financial generosity via assistance packages, emphasizing the most recent pledge for the redevelopment of Warner Park, scheduled to host World Cup Cricket Games in 2007.
The goal of the ministerial meeting is to review Taiwan’s assistance to friendly governments including St. Vincent and the Grenadines, Grenada and St. Kitts and Nevis.
Minister Harris reiterated the need for renewed commitment and action towards the full recognition of the Government and People of the Republic of China on Taiwan to assume their legitimate place in the International community.
Minister Harris empathized with the Republic’s recent rejection as a member of the World Health Assembly but credited the support of the United States and Japan for Taiwan in this specific attempt.
The Minister cited similarities between the people of the Caribbean and Taiwan suggesting that these likenesses should make us sympathetic to their cause. He mentioned emergence from colonialism, the quest for Independence and the right to govern our affairs as sovereign nations.
The Federation of St. Kitts and Nevis is scheduled to host a delegation from the ROC and other friendly OECS allies early next year for a similar gathering.
