Digicel Donates to Special Olympics in Support of their Journey to China

(Basseterre; St. Kitts): Digicel Wireless has once gain contributed to the community of St. Kitts and Nevis by making a special donation to the Federations Special Olympics team.
A handing over ceremony was held earlier today, Thursday, Sep. 20 at Digicel’s main office where Marketing Executive Andrea Liburd handed over a cheque of EC$27,000 on behalf of Digicel.
Liburd said that they are not only sponsoring Special Olympics but also helping them towards their participation in the World Games to be held in Shanghai, China from Oct. 2-11 which Digicel is very proud to assist in.
The team consists of 16 athletes and coaches who are expected to leave the Federation next Wednesday, Sep. 26.
Richard Stanton, Country Manager of Digicel St. Kitts & Nevis stated in a release that they are very pleased to make the donation to the worthy cause.
“The World Games will be one of the largest sporting events taking place this year and we applaud the dedication and commitment of all the athletes taking part,” he said.
Digicel has supported the Special Olympics since its establishment in the region and was instrumental in forming a team of athletes making it possible for them to attend the 2003 Special Olympics World Summer games that were held in Ireland.
Even though the team has been receiving money through sponsorship and donations from other individuals and companies they are still EC50,000 short from the total cost needed to make the trip a reality.
They are still appealing to the general public to assist them in any way they can by supporting their fundraising initiatives which they will be organizing to assist them in traveling to China.
The World Games are held every four years with a participation of about 10,000 athletes from over one hundred countries.
