Charlestown Nevis (August 16, 2004) Nevis’ Ministry of Tourism Research and Development Unit commenced its third annual seminar for Introduction to Careers in Tourism, earlier today at the Government Training Centre at Pinneys Industrial Site.
With over fifteen participants and with five days of intense training, the seminar was geared towards the awareness of the various products within the tourism sector, as well as to allow the participants to decide on the specific area or profession that they would be interested in.
A brief opening ceremony was held to commence the workshop and Ms Zahnela Claxton welcomed all. She noted that the department’s objective of the workshop was to seek to broaden the participants understanding of the tourist industry as well as to highlight the various opportunities that could be derived.
Minister of Tourism, the Hon Malcolm Guishard, in giving some brief remarks said that the tourism industry was the fastest growing industry in the entire world. He told the participants that they were getting involved in an industry that would be around for many, many years and one, which would outlive anyone of them.
“I think Nevis has positioned itself to accommodate and attract many of those persons who want to travel,” the Tourism Minister commented. “We have created a niche for ourselves and with your participation and your support, Nevis can continue to grow”.

“You would have heard a lot about Nevis and the tourism industry, how it is striving,” he continued. “There are many areas which this administration has looked at over the years, and there are many other areas which we would continue to look at over the years.”
Premier, the Hon Vance Amory, while delivering the feature address, told the participants to grasp the opportunities that have been presented to them. He said, “What is important is that while you are able as young people, you take the opportunity to search out for yourself, which area and which niche in the industry you want to fill and where you want to create opportunities for yourself.”
Small Business Development Officer, in the Nevis Island Administration, Ms Deborah Tyrell also gave some brief remarks. She pointed out that her key responsibility was to stimulate growth in the productive sector of the economy through direct focus on small and micro enterprise development.
She told the gathering that her portfolio had direct link with the tourism industry in that; many of the businesses filtering through her office will be producers of handicraft, agro processing products, garments, soft furnishing and personal services.
According to Tyrell, “Tourism is a continual circle of promotion and marketing, accommodation and entertainment assessment, as well as growth and development. Within each segment, any one can find interesting work. The key is to do something that is interesting to you.”
