Press Release

BASSETERRE St.Kitts, July 21st, 2011 - Crop forecast for July and August 2011 indicates that locally produced tomatoes, sweet peppers, sweet potatoes, peanuts, watermelon, pumpkin, cabbage and carrot will be available.

The Department of Agriculture forecast shows that for July and August some 76,760 pounds of sweet potatoes will be available way in excess of the projected domestic demand of 24,000 pounds for July and August combined.  Peanut production for July has been put at 8800 pounds.  The estimated demand for peanut is 6000 pounds for July.

Pumpkin production is projected at 42100 pounds for the same period.  This output surpasses domestic combined demand of 40000 pounds for July and August.

Domestic carrot production is put at 15520 pounds for July and 14720 pounds for August.

Agriculture officials are generally pleased with the outturn. “The farmers are continuing to ensure that ample food is available to meet the demands for selected produce.

As production exceeds domestic demand greater will be the need for appropriate storage facilities, agro processing facilities and greater variety in the uses made of our fresh produce” said Dr Timothy Harris, Senior Minister and Minister of Agriculture.
