    BASSETERRE St.Kitts, July 21st, 2011 - Dr the Hon Timothy Harris, Senior Minister and Minister of Agriculture is among Ministerial delegates attending the 31st Regular Meeting of the Executive Committee of the Inter American Institute for Cooperation on Agriculture (IICA) taking place in San Jose, Costa Rica.  Dr Harris joined the Executive Committee in October 2010.

     

    IICA is the premier hemispheric organization in Latin American and the Caribbean promoting agricultural and rural development since 1942.  It comprises thirty four (34) countries.

     

    Several matters are down for discussion, including a paper on innovation to achieve competitive sustainable and inclusive agriculture, strategic relationships between IICA, CARDI and CATIE.  The financial status of the Institute, the external Auditor’s Report, and the Audit Review Committee Report are to be discussed at the meeting.

     

    The Executive Committee will also receive a progress report on the organization of the upcoming meeting of Ministers of Agriculture of the Americas and a progress report on the Declaration of Ministers of Agriculture.

     

    Dr Harris is expected to hold bilateral meetings with Dr Victor Villalobos, Director General of IICA on matters of particular interest to St Kitts and Nevis and the wider Caribbean.

     

    In his capacity as Chairman of CARDI, Dr Harris along with Dr Arlington Chesney, Executive Director of CARDI, will also discuss ongoing programmes between CARDI and IICA.
