BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – FROM a field of 18 registered calypsonians, 14 will go through to the semi-finals show this Friday (July 22) at the Nevis Cultural Complex.

According to Chesley Davis, Chairman of the Calypso Committee, there have been a number of setbacks due to the elections but he thinks they are now prepared to move forward.

He also noted that because of that, it was impossible for the Culturama Committee to host tents or Quarter-Finals. However, it is anticipated that this year's contest will be both interesting and exciting.

The semi-finalists, who will compete in the TDC sponsored show, are: Mighty Wingie, Daddy Nature, Hollywood, Rako-B, Baker, Pupa Wheeler, Enforcer, Garlic, Watusi, Nutsy, I-Sour Sop, Kebi, Alamoulou and Dis & Dat.

Each contender will perform two songs. Seven of the contenders will be selected to go up against King Astro for his crown.

Last year’s king, Astro, received the judges’ nod singing ‘Crusade’ and ‘Jungle’ totalling 863.5 points. His performance was described as superb and was said to have a very high degree of consistency, excellent voice control and clarity.

The finals will take place on Saturday, July 29 at the same venue. The calypsonians will be backed by the Kasanova Band.

The calypso show is being held as part of Nevis’ 2011 Culturama Celebrations that will run from July 21 to August 2 under the theme;  ‘Mas, Music, Fun for 2k11! Truly a Cultural Expression’.
