ROADTOWN Tortola BVI, July 21st, 2011  – The Territory received its annual summer make-over as young people from all districts united to clean and maintain the roadsides during their summer vacation as part of the Solid Waste Department’s annual summer clean-up programme.

Communities in Tortola such as Cane Garden Bay, Brewers Bay, Apple Bay, Long Trench, Huntums Ghut, East End/Long Look and Sea Cows Bay, as well as communities on the sister islands, were some of the areas which received the daily attention of approximately 200 summer student workers during the two week programme which was held from 11-22 July.Solid Waste Manager, Mr. Anslem Myers is heartened by the response and enthusiasm of the students in their beautification efforts.

He said, “It is always inspirational to see how these young people take pride in aesthetics of the Territory and show community spirit by participating in this campaign.” Cleanup teams were provided with garbage bags and first aid kits by the department, as well as safety instructions for working in the programme.

Teams started daily between 6am and 7am, and ended between 11am and 12pm, while the Solid Waste Department provided a special pick-up service to assist with the removal of the accumulated waste.

The annual summer clean-up campaign, which has grown in popularity among the youths in the communities, started over five years ago as part of the Government’s outreach efforts to incorporate the young people in beautifying the Territory.

The campaign also aimed to provide students ages 11-16 years with an opportunity to gain work experience and taught them about environmental stewardship. The students were recruited at the end of the school term by field supervisors within their communities.

The Solid Waste Department of the Ministry of Health and Social Development is responsible for the collection and disposal of community solid waste, as well as the promotion of proper waste disposal practices.
