ROADTOWN Tortola BVI, July 25th, 2011  – The Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) Tanker that overturned on Virgin Gorda’s airport public road was safely removed. Last Thursday, technicians from TROPIGAS, the Puerto Rican company from whom the tank was purchased and local trucking companies collaborated to remove the LPG tanker from site

The team first transferred some of the LPG from the overturned tank to an empty tank, lifted it using a crane and then placed the tank in a safe location for further inspection.

Acting Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Communications and Works Mrs. Arlene Smith-Thompson, who was on site, told the Department of Information and Public Relations the procedure went smoothly and without hindrance.

Mrs. Smith-Thompson thanked the various companies involved in the relief effort, saying, “On behalf of the Ministry of Communications and Works, much gratitude is given to TROPIGAS, D&B Trucking, Hawk’s Gas, Sam Leonard Trucking, Erick Trucking, D&I Construction Equipment and all those whose collaborative effort provided for the safe removal of the LPG tanker.”

The Virgin Islands Fire and Rescue Services Department, Department of Disaster Management and the Royal Virgin Islands Police Force also provided assistance.

The 40-foot LPG tanker, carrying over 10,000 gallons, overturned on the airport road located between Speedy's Garage and the Valley Methodist Church last Tuesday morning.

The Ministry of Communications and Works is the lead Government agency responsible for the safe transportation of hazardous materials in the Territory.
