Press & Public Relations, Nevis Island Administration
The old sugar mill and factory at Hamilton Estate.
    Charlestown Nevis (August 19, 2004)
As the relationship between the Nevis Island Administration and the Norwegian Company based in Nevis, Carino Nevis Limited, continues to demonstrate productiveness, plans are afoot for the development of the old sugar mill and factory at Hamilton Estate.

Speaking to the Government Information Services on Wednesday 18, Director of Fisheries and one of the Project Directors, Mr. Arthur Anslyn noted that the sugar mill and factory at Hamilton would be restored, with the introduction of a restaurant in the surroundings.

Remarked Anslyn: “The plan afoot for the development of the mill and the factory is partial restoration of the ruin and also the introduction of a restaurant in the surroundings. The ruin itself will be built back to what it used to be and the intention is to get the machinery cleaned up and painted to look presentable.”

Anslyn further stated that there would be signs to explain to the visitors what part of the process the pieces of equipment used to play in the production of sugar.  He also stated that there was a lot of work to be done and noted that some of the coppers that played an important role in the then day-to-day operation, had been removed.

The other Project Director, Mr. Jorn Eivik, of Carino Nevis Limited told the press that the restaurant would be an international restaurant with all types of foods, but would mainly focus on sea foods.  He also noted that persons using the restaurants will be able to sit inside the building and while they eat, can look at the equipment and their previous functions.

Mr. Eivik took the opportunity to appeal to the citizens, to refrain from removing the stones at the site, in order to retain the historical scenery of the compound.  He explained the introduction of a spa centre which would be located just outside of the factory, for all the people on the island and visitors alike to have access.  He said, “It is going to be a training centre with connection to a hot spring, and the old ruins would be clear so it can be used as a reception to the spa centre.”

He noted that the spa centre would be done together with a Swedish group and an Italian group, “so we will have all the aspects of what you’ll need to have your health in shape”.
