Press Release

ROADTOWN Tortola BVI, July 25th, 2011 - The Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) is encouraging all motorists to get acquainted with the proper licensing procedures and requirements in order to avoid any possible hindrance when licensing vehicles.

Deputy Commissioner of Motor Vehicles Mr. Kye Rymer said the department is aware that some persons have experienced some issues when trying to license their vehicles. He said, “The Department of Motor Vehicles is mindful that persons may not be that familiar with basic vehicle requirements, and we are encouraging the entire public to educate themselves using the department’s basic Vehicle Inspection Checklist.”Mr. Rymer indicated the areas motorists often overlook are included in the checklist, saying, “The checklist makes it clear for those motorists who often forget basic yet essential elements.

For example, some forget to check whether their wipers are functional. Others may not be aware that both left and right indicators have to be functional as well. Also, many may not realise vehicles must have at least one spare tyre, which should be in good condition and not worn down.”

Requirements for head lights, brake lights, licence plates, bumpers, steering, windscreens, horns and mufflers are also outlined in the Vehicle Inspection Checklist.

The deputy commissioner said DMV vehicle inspectors are solely guided by the requirements as stipulated by Road Traffic (Motor Vehicle Registration and Operation, and Driver and Vehicle Licensing) Regulations, 2009. If persons have any queries regarding the requirements, they should contact the DMV directly.

For a copy of the Vehicle Inspection Checklist, contact the DMV at telephone 468-3701 extension 4080 or visit the office located in the R & R Malone Complex at Pockwood Pond.

he Department of Motor Vehicles serves as Government’s focal point for policy and operational matters pertaining to the licensing of vehicles and vehicle operators.
