    BASSETERRE, ST. KITTS (AUGUST 23RD 2004) – A Sub-Committee has been established to spearhead a number of initiatives in the fight against crime, as a result of discussions Monday morning between the Federal Government and the St. Kitts and Nevis Chamber of Industry and Commerce.
    During the meeting, chaired by Deputy Prime Minister, the Hon. Sam Condor, at Government Headquarters, several government officials brought the Chamber officials up to date on efforts, both locally and regionally, to tackle the problem of crime.
     
    The sub-committee was appointed to draft the protocol for a Crime Stoppers Programme, which calls for the establishment of a dedicated hotline for citizens and residents to report crime and information to the police and the payment of a monetary reward, if there is an arrest and conviction.
     
    The Committee is comprised of the Assistant Secretary, Ministry of National Security; Acting Commissioner of the Royal St. Christopher and Nevis Police; Commander, St. Kitts and Nevis Defence Force; Financial Officer, Royal St. Christopher and Nevis Police Force and a representative of the St. Kitts and Nevis Chamber of Industry and Commerce.
     
    Government and chamber officials also discussed ways to build consensus on the public and private sectors condemnation of criminal activity and identify areas of collaboration between the business community and Government in reducing the incidence of crime.
     
    The Chamber sought from police officials a list of critical needs of the Police Force to assist them in performing their duties more effectively and efficiently.
     
    Government officials present included Attorney General and Minister of Justice and Legal Affairs, Hon. Delano Bart; Chief Secretary and Permanent Secretary, Ministry of National Security, Mr. Joseph Edmeade; Acting Commissioner of Police, Mr. Robert Jeffers and Commander of the St. Kitts-Nevis Defence Force, Major Patrick Wallace.
     
    The Chamber was led by its President, Mr. Anthony Abourizk; Immediate Past President, Mr. Carol Evelyn, Attorney Emile Ferdinand and Messrs. Michael Morton and Alford Tyrell.
