ROADTOWN Tortola BVI, July 26th, 2011  – The Ministry of Natural Resources and Labour and the Conservation and Fisheries Department are reminding the public of the upcoming closed season for lobsters which will take effect from July 31 – October 31.

As stated in the Fisheries Regulations, 2003, during the closed season no person shall take from the fishery waters, expose for sale, sell, purchase or have in their possession any lobster whether in whole or in part.

Chief Conservation and Fisheries Officer Mr. Bertrand Lettsome said the closed season regulations are in place to protect the lobster species during the summer months which are the peak of their reproductive season.

“This is a main conservation method used to ensure the lobster population in our waters continue to be sustainable. The closed season allows the lobsters to breed and replenish their stocks and demonstrates a clear sign of the Territory’s commitment to protecting a most valuable fisheries resource,” Mr. Lettsome said.

The Chief Conservation and Fisheries officer also notes that responsible citizens and the fishing community all have a part to play to ensure the local eco-system remains in tack while livelihoods are sustained. The Conservation and Fisheries Department is appealing to all vigilant and conscientious residents to report any breaches of the closed season regulations to the department.

The Ministry of Natural Resources and Labour and the Conservation and Fisheries Department promote a natural environment where humans live in harmony with nature and the use of sustainable methods to ensure renewable resources are protected is continued.
